CHAPTER seventeen

SHAKING his head, he slammed his hand down on Henry’s desk saying, “Elizabeth shall be my wife, have no doubt of that! I shall personally make certain that she pays and pays dearly for her sins against me. Mr. Bennet, I am a bit short on funds and I have to take the mail coach this morn, you see I thought I would be leaving with at least fifty pounds of my brides dowry, so I did not think to bring additional funds.”

Mr. Bennet was so surprised and delighted by all that he was hearing, he had no idea what to say. Collins was not blaming him! He actually thought that those girls had come up with this all on their own accord. Amazing! But he was going to go along with the man, as this just meant he and Wickham could continue on with their plans, once that moron returned from Kent.

In fact, he decided to add flammant to the fire, by saying, “Cousin, only you… can even begin to guess at the depth of my despair. After seeing what my daughter, my own daughter has done to you. A man after my own heart…I am without words. Allow me this much, I shall have my carriage prepared for you. And I shall send you with two drivers, so that you can make your way to your Lady as quickly as possible.”

Collins looked as if he would fall to his knees and kiss Henry’s feet, but instead he simply placed his hand over his cousin’s and said in a voice that sounded fevered and fanatical, “Cousin, believe me when I say, do not fear this! All is not lost! Our arrangement shall still stand, nothing has changed in that regard. All that we have done, all that we have planned shall still come to pass. Lady Catherine will make this thing right, you have no idea the power and connexions that are at her disposal. I am uncertain if she can do anything about Mr. Bingley’s marriage to Miss Bennet, but I assure you Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth’s marriage shall be annulled before the end of this very month.”

Henry blinked back tears. Tears of hope and anger, as he asked, “And what of her brother, Lord Matlock. He also seems to be totally entrenched in their lies, and betrayals…Do you think she can change his mind? Mayhap win him over to her side?”

He asked those questions as he did not wish for Mr. Collins to know that he had lost any parental rights to all of those girls. And the Earl of Matlock was now in charge of their futures along with the Duke of Stiles, Ned Gardiner and Mr. Darcy.

Mr. Collins gave him a grim, crazed smile, before answering, “I shall repeat the words of my Lady to you sir. Said she, my brother has no hold on me, I have him right where I wish him to be. Matlock will never defy me, as he does
